Aisha al-Bawniyyah,

'' Love is an ocean that has no shore

And there is light in which there is no darkness

Love is a secret that is hard to find

And there is one point that is difficult to explain

This is God's grace, He gives it to whom He wills''


This is the meaning of some poems written by Ayesha al-Bawniyyah who lived in Syria in the 15th century.


Aisha al-Bawniyyah, described by one biographer as 'one of the wonders of her time', was born in Damascus in 1456. His father Yusuf was a member of the famous 'Al-Ba'awniyya family' of scholars, poets and jurists and a Qazi (judge) in Damascus.

Palestinian historian Waleed Khalidi believes that in Ayesha "her family's literary talents and Sufi tendencies were fully displayed."
